Quanta / Signal / Noise is an innovative interactive work by Langham Research Centre that marks a significant departure from traditional musical structures. This composition shifts the listener's focus from the established elements of melody, rhythm, and harmony, emphasizing instead the intrinsic qualities of sound—its textures, shapes, energies, and dynamics.

The manual variPlay interface offers a dynamic experience, allowing the piece to evolve as users manipulate its auditory components. This results in the emergence of captivating soundscapes that can be reorganized and interchanged, inviting listeners to explore imaginary places and narratives. The fluidity of these sound canvases encourages a creative process akin to brushing, sketching, and collaging various sonic elements.

Conversely, the automatic variPlay interface employs algorithmic playback alongside user input to generate new iterations of the composition. This feature not only enhances interactivity but also provides an opportunity for users to engage with the innovative approaches of avant-garde composers who have influenced music since the mid-20th century.
